Morning Reflections

Post by Amberlily »

Every morning
I am greeted by the sun
assaulting my eyes,
and jolly singing birds
pestering like a parent
who wants me to wake up.

I stretch my muscles
and hear my bones crack
at the young age of 23
too sore to move
too poor to stay in bed.

I zombie walk
to my coffee maker
and hit “START”
thinking that this button
officially starts my day.

After the timer dings
I swallow the sludge.
I don my work clothes
as a symbol of my slavery
to the lower class
living standards.

The old lock on my door clicks,
And as I leave my small apartment
I wonder if earning my tuition
is worth the grind,
and for some reason
I always think “yes”.

This is a very well-crafted poem in my opinion. I really appreciate the existential dread you convey and I think a lot of readers would relate!

Thank you Kat! I did put a lot of time into editing this poem until I felt that I was happy with it.
