February
between endings and beginnings, winter and spring,
a wry smile on your frost-flecked face.
One day brings diamond raindrops glistening
on sun-washed washing lines, spectra aglow,
and dawn comes earlier, and bold birds sing.
The next brings flurries of frustrated snow,
not ready to relinquish winter's reign,
ice catches careless feet floundering below.
And then clouds break, and shafts shimmer again,
and the white earth is softened by the rays
though little piles of patchwork snow remain.
Month of lingering, lengthening days,
of crocuses' first bloom, a rainbow sea,
where winter wearies, and where springtime plays.
There is such beauty in that brevity,
curtailed, capricious, fickle February!

I love the crocus flower.
A nice ode.
