February

Post by Lincolnshirelass »

Month in miniature, you slip into place
between endings and beginnings, winter and spring,
a wry smile on your frost-flecked face.

One day brings diamond raindrops glistening
on sun-washed washing lines, spectra aglow,
and dawn comes earlier, and bold birds sing.

The next brings flurries of frustrated snow,
not ready to relinquish winter's reign,
ice catches careless feet floundering below.

And then clouds break, and shafts shimmer again,
and the white earth is softened by the rays
though little piles of patchwork snow remain.

Month of lingering, lengthening days,
of crocuses' first bloom, a rainbow sea,
where winter wearies, and where springtime plays.

There is such beauty in that brevity,
curtailed, capricious, fickle February!
An Eye for an Eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

I thoroughly enjoyed your true creativity in depicting February so precisely. It is definitely one of the shorter months, giving it’s wintry mixes just before Spring! Sort of wishy washy, so to speak.
Your expressions are so vividly conveyed!!!:tiphat:

I know why February is the month you sing about.

I love the crocus flower.

A nice ode.

This is a lovely poem. I see you've got others posted here, but my time is short at the moment - I'll be back.

This poem made me picture February as a naughty pixie. Loved it. Thanks for sharing!

I love the intricate rhyme scheme - is there a technical term for that? I call it a daisy chain - and the use of alliteration, bringing echoes of Anglo-Saxon poetry.

How have I missed this since you first posted it? I must be getting old [:- (

As usual an excellent effort and I think one of your best.

Thanks all for the kind words. In answer to your question, @Libs_Books, this is actually based on an Italian verse form called terza rima.
An Eye for an Eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
