Expectations

Post by myyamouse18 »

Knock knock
WHos's there?
Expectations,
Expectations who?

Expectations of you
which you are somehow expected to fulfill
Or face the never-ending waves of disappointment.
Expectations that stem
from the failed dreams of parents
who expect
that you- their child will achieve their dream for them

Expectations of people who
know better but do not do better
and yet somehow expect you to be better.

My biggest fear used to be disappointing you
till I realized you kept disappointing me.
Always asking things of me you know I cant achieve
while ignoring the things I do achieve.

I was never good enough
I could always do better
and you wonder where my obsession with perfection came from
you wonder now why I'm always downtrodden?
you caused it

Perhaps my problems with perfection were inherited,
from who?
no one else but you.

For you could never understand that
I am me, not you.

You say that you are not the parents of
Tom, Dick and Harry
Well I am not the child of
Samantha, Laura or Mary

I really enjoyed the theme of this poem as I read it. It’s definitely quite clever. I absolutely love how it begins.

I feel like you lose a little flow in your longer stanzas, but it’s still really good. I was really happy to read it.
