Twelfth Night (with apologies to the Bard for nicking his title!)
after festive, after pensive days,
and time slewed and stalled, you draw near ....
after singing, after tears and praise
as imperceptibly the winter night
yields earlier to mauve-washed morning greys ...
So you draw near, as memories take flight,
and future, present, past, just briefly merge
and we take down the baubles, fragile, bright,
take down the cards, regret, relief, converge,
and normal rhythms, normal tasks return,
and daily rituals, half-dozing, re-emerge,
and sometimes, yes, we sigh, and we still yearn
for the time awaiting and between,
when the world sleeps and wakes, and candles burn,
and we half-glimpse the longed for and unseen,
whatever we expected or believe,
whatever we want Christmas time to mean,
For some it is a time to ponder, and to grieve,
for some a time of joy and hopes reborn,
and then there is the year that we must leave,
and we are anxious waiting for the dawn,
and don't know what we'll face and what we'll see,
houses and hearts stripped bare, somehow forlorn ...
But time must pass, this is how it must be,
and perhaps, whatever is our creed,
we should enact our own Epiphany,
and plant some tiny, cold-defying seed,
and let it bloom, and watch it struggle, grow,
as we share its essence and its need,
for light and care where love and waters flow ....
and a new world and year for us to know.
