Song of the Shell

Post by Lincolnshirelass »

I pause, my eyes shut tight, and hold
the shell close to my ear,
and hear the melody unfold,
as distant depths draw near,
lost to reality behold
invisible and clear
the place where wind-rocked white waves roar
upon a golden sun-drenched shore.

And then a different scene emerges,
I see the crusted coast of snow
glittering on arctic verges
where iced winds forever blow,
hear the squalls as crashing surges
of the northern ocean flow
where the music of the shell
has another tale to tell.

Once again the view is shifting,
now a dream-like land is there,
silver, gold and sapphire sifting
in the sharp, sweet, sea-tinged air,
barriers and borders lifting,
music from I know not where .....
but then it flickers out of reach.
And I'm alone here on the beach.
An Eye for an Eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
