Under Blanket Heaps

I feast
while my brothers starve.
I sleep
while my sisters shiver.
I live
while my children die.

I fear feelings of guilt lest
I feel guilty for feeling guilt.
There is a shame with my inner peace
in light of those whose filthy wealth
isn’t cloaked in such relief.

Pain is a mask I wear
to blend in a world of it.
Happiness is a curse I fear
in a world too devoid of it.
Loneliness is a shield I keep
in a world so crowded with it.
Love is a burden I hoard
in a world bursting at the seams with it.
