The Ring

Post by Sanamarie »

I think about it
All the time
The ring that I didn’t take
From my granny

I remember the day
She looked over to me
Took her ring off
A thick silver band on her thumb
Bought in Cuba
On a whim
For not a lot
But worth something
She wore it every day

That day we lay together
Lounging in her day room
We laughed and we talked
Saucy jokes and poking fun
A twinkle in her eye

She flipped through her magazine
And I peeped over her shoulder
Looking at the glossy pictures
The fan oscillated in the corner

Then suddenly, she pressed it into my hand
It was warm
Solid
Heavy
My stomach knotted
As dread settled

Here, she said, take this
No, it’s yours
Take it, she said
No, it’s yours, you need it
Take it, I don’t need it for anything
No, you need it.

I turned it back onto her finger
With violence and urgency
Before the world could spin off its axis
Before the floor could swallow us whole

And I think about it now
Often when I am alone
What she was giving to me
Not the ring
The warmth of her hand on mine
To wear always

And I know I will want it
I will want it so badly
I will want to have taken if from her
In that sunlit, golden moment
But I wasn’t ready
To let her give it away
I do not want her parting gift
I cannot bear the cost

I can see that the ring held sentimental meanings for the persona. Nice, poem.
