Taking the Easy Way Out.

Post by Vivian Paschal »

Adrenaline kicks in and I can’t take it anymore. He’s getting wilder. He doesn’t even have the patience to get to his room anymore. Tomorrow will be worse. The next, I don’t even want to imagine it. I should make a run for it and never turn back. My papa didn’t raise a fool. This has to end. Providence. There’s a pen on the table not far away. For a second, he draws the shape of my breast with his index finger. The perv has loosened his hold. I dash towards the table and grab the pen. I send the pointed edge of the pen into his left arm with everything in me.
Pens have killed people before. He withdraws. I try again before he has a chance to recover. Time to run. But then I think better of it. Madam’s little girl will suffer the impact of what I have done. I cannot let him continue using his own daughter as an object of sexual gratification. I cannot let him take advantage of any other girl. So I dash towards the kitchen instead of the door. He follows behind. Being the maid, I know the kitchen like the back of my palm. The knives are hung on the rack just beside the door. As he walks in behind me, I drive a knife through his chest.
There goes the lion. I watch him fall. I watch him die. Slowly, I realise I have killed a man. I am conflicted. I cannot tell if it proves that I am strong or if it just makes me a coward. Should I stay and tell the police that I am a liberator. That I saved my life and the life of Madam’s daughter by taking a man’s life. Will Madam believe me? Will the little girl have the courage to say the truth? Will I suffer for thinking of all the other girls whose lives he could have destroyed? Am I a saviour? A killer? These thoughts dance around in my head. No, I am a killer. Running is now an option.

Wow. I loved how the story unfolded slowly in every sentence. I really enjoyed reading this! Thanks for sharing.

Very nicely done! The staccato, short sentences enhance the feeling of urgency /tension, and the story itself leaves the reader with unanswered questions of both the narrator's fate as well as the justice of her actions.

I enjoyed reading this. You definitely have talent.

I really enjoyed this short quick story. For a story so short, it really packed a punch! You crafted a story that captured the sense of desperation, pain and confusion of a woman in this kind of situation. Amazingly done!

It's difficult to do micro-fiction well as there's no space for redundant words/phrases but I agree with the previous posts. You've communicated a lot in that one snapshot &, what is more, it's compelling. Great job :)
