Taking the Easy Way Out.
Pens have killed people before. He withdraws. I try again before he has a chance to recover. Time to run. But then I think better of it. Madam’s little girl will suffer the impact of what I have done. I cannot let him continue using his own daughter as an object of sexual gratification. I cannot let him take advantage of any other girl. So I dash towards the kitchen instead of the door. He follows behind. Being the maid, I know the kitchen like the back of my palm. The knives are hung on the rack just beside the door. As he walks in behind me, I drive a knife through his chest.
There goes the lion. I watch him fall. I watch him die. Slowly, I realise I have killed a man. I am conflicted. I cannot tell if it proves that I am strong or if it just makes me a coward. Should I stay and tell the police that I am a liberator. That I saved my life and the life of Madam’s daughter by taking a man’s life. Will Madam believe me? Will the little girl have the courage to say the truth? Will I suffer for thinking of all the other girls whose lives he could have destroyed? Am I a saviour? A killer? These thoughts dance around in my head. No, I am a killer. Running is now an option.
