Review of Unleashing the Power Within
I received Unleashing the Power Within: A Journey of Self-Discovery through Poetry by Lisa McCarthy to review and gave it a rating of 4 out of 5.
This is Lisa’s second book, and it is a collection of some wonderful poems and brief reflections by this talented author.
They focus on various topics, but mostly, I would say, on joy, contentment, tenacity, and belief in yourself to succeed.
Some of the reflections in the book resonated more than others. Ones I especially liked included:
“A Good Friend” – “A good friend is like your favorite song that never gets old.” How true that is. Some songs, and even movies, you can replay time and time again and never become tired of them. Good friends are very much like that. You never get tired of being with them and sharing experiences, a “bond that is true and never ends.”
“Joy Through Our Inner Child” – “As children, we were full of life, sparkle, and joy.” That’s how we start off, and then along come parents, society, and school “to change and shape us into who they thought we should be.” I believe we need to rekindle the innocence and joyfulness of the child that is still within us. Cast off the chains of so-called normality, and live life to the fullest without those limiting boundaries.
“Happiness” – “Happiness is like a dress.” My initial thought is that we should all wear happiness so that others can see that we are happy, as happiness is contagious.
“No Longer Bound by Negativity” – “It is a good day to stop caring what others say.” So often we can be swayed by our concerns about what our family or peers may say about what we do. So long as we are not harming anyone, it is far better to ignore those self-imposed boundaries on what we do.
“A Beautiful Day” – “Today is a gift, a beautiful day.” What a positive and wonderful way to look at things.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone looking for thought-provoking words, poems, and ideas.
I was slightly disappointed that, when Lisa provided rhyming poetry, the rhyming lines were not always set out on separate lines but were instead strung together into a paragraph. Even the free verse poems were often written as a single paragraph. This is just a personal preference: I like the rhymes and poems shown as separate lines, as it helps me better appreciate the words and structure. By merging the words into one paragraph, I felt that some of their significance was lost.
There were no grammatical errors that I spotted. I did, however, deduct one point due to the format of most of the book. I felt that, in this case, a more structured approach to the powerful words and thoughts would have helped me enjoy the book more.
