Catnip of Life is a book of poetry written by author Sharla Lee. She uses her poetry to capture the essence of the natural world and transfers that to readers through rhyme. The poems have a light, almost musical flow to them that take the reader on a journey through nature. The author makes use of quotes and reflection questions weaved into the book that ask the reader to self-reflect and exist in the moment. This makes for an engaging piece that can be read over and over again with a new revelation each time.

Catnip of Life has many positive aspects. My favorite technique used by the author is intense imagery. Sharla Lee does an excellent job of creating full, fleshed out pictures in the readers mind that make browsing each poem a novel experience. Her general flow and word choice create a song-like story that invokes feelings of warmth and comfort. The themes of nature and being present in your environment send a strong message that any human can connect with. The addition of simple illustrations throughout the book adds a touch of whimsy that blends well with the natural themes.

Another aspect I enjoyed about Sharla Lee’s book is the feeling of calmness and serenity she managed to create. Her poems follow a smooth path through the different seasons and changes in life, making it easy to discover a poem perfect for anything you may be going through. Her attempt to bring about deeper thought and awareness is successful. After reading, I felt much more in touch with my surroundings and aware of the positive impacts of spending time deep in nature. The book has no apparent spelling or grammatical errors and reads as fully edited.

I can not find anything negative about Catnip of Life to comment on. The book is filled with timeless poems, has no errors in the writing, and is a book I might find myself reaching for time and time again.

Overall, I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. It is well edited, beautifully written, and stands out with its dynamic poems and earthly themes. I recommend this book to lovers of poetry and art. It is also a book I would recommend to anyone seeking an introduction to poetry. I recommend this book to families searching for material the whole family can read together in place of a bedtime story.
