Review of A Brighter Tomorrow
Beautiful is what comes to mind when you read A Brighter Tomorrow by Lori Schneider, MD. It is a collection of thoughtful and lovely poems that are bound to make even the most cynical heart emotional.
The author, Lucy Schneider, is a neurologist and medical acupuncturist who discovered her passion for poetry when the pandemic started in 2020. She noticed how writing poetry has made her optimistic about the future regardless of the doom and gloom of the pandemic era. The book has seven sections, and each one has a theme, e.g., love, courage, pandemic etc. The poems flow beautifully, emphasizing the words in a rhythmic dance. Some are passionate and inspiring, others nostalgic and melancholy. They all invoke the readers' emotions in a thought-provoking way, leaving an imprint in their minds. The illustrations are also vividly colourful and captured the essence of the poems beautifully.
I love all the poems, but I have a few favourites in the collection. ‘Writer’s Block’ is something I can relate to. As an aspiring writer, my creative juices cease sometimes, and I cannot seem to write anything meaningful for weeks. ‘Please Tell Me Your Story' is one poem that echoes the sentiment of every human being today. It sharply brings to mind the widespread panic, the loss of loved ones to the cold hands of the virus, the economic chaos and job insecurity, and the looming fear of what the future would be. ‘No Regrets’ makes me remember when racism was rife and interracial marriages were vehemently discouraged. It also makes me appreciate how much the world has evolved and how people are now less judgemental and more accepting.
My only issue is with the format of the book. I had to zoom in to read the poems on the pdf version I downloaded. It made the pages too large to fit the screen and to see the illustrations, I had to either zoom out or slide the cursor from left to right and back again. I did find this a bit cumbersome as it affected my reading experience a little.
Conclusively, I would rate the book 3 out of 4 stars only because of the formatting issue. Otherwise, it was a lovely read. The author intended it to be inspiring and comforting, and I have to say it definitely hit its mark. I only spotted one error, so it was professionally well edited. Because of the absence of profanity and erotic scenes, I believe it is suitable for readers of all ages. If you enjoy beautiful poetry, then this is the book for you.
