The Immigrant's Lament is a collection of thoughts in the form of poetic verses which paint vivid and at times a melancholy portrait of the separation from one's homeland. Impressions of integration into a new society and culture abound. In addition, the author artfully touches the reader's sense of loss and disconnection. The verses allow the reader to connect and see themselves in the experience. At times, a sense of solitude and at others as sense of connection with familiar traditions and customs. Sitting with the thoughts and feelings within this work bring the reader full circle with the immigrant experience.
The reader must be prepared though for difficulty. This is not an easy topic and at certain points the book is almost too somber. Keep reading because the author finds ways to illustrate a sense of joy and belonging notwithstanding the realities of the immigrant experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I give it a rating of a 4 out of 4. This is not an easy topic. It is one that is layered in both positive and negative experiences. This author does a fantastic job of providing both a window out of which we can relate to him, as well as a mirror through which we can confront our own situations.
