Review of Souls Run Wild
David Payne’s Souls Run Wild is a stark look at war and terrorism and what it takes to survive.
In 1976, Ireland was under siege. A war was being waged between the Protestant and Catholic groups, fueled by hatred and terrorist groups, including the IRA. The British Army embedded themselves into specific areas to alleviate the pressure and eradicate the terrorists. David Payne was the leader of a specialized group working to earn the trust of the citizens of Newry and help put an end to the bombings, death, and fear. While his group succeeded, they also planted a target on their back. David became the latest victim of terroristic bombing, and only through sheer determination is he able to survive. And that is just the beginning of an incredibly interesting life.
This book is fascinating and heart-rending. It is written as a biographical work of fiction, though it is strongly hinted at that it is the author’s life story. The amount of pain and suffering at the hands of war, terrorists, illness, loss, and even torture is astonishing. The average person would be brought to their knees and give up. David Payne withstood it all with grit and pure will. It is a testament that with enough will, there is always a way, even when it seems hopeless.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It provides a comprehensive, in-depth look at the conflict between the British military and the unrest in Ireland. I only deducted a star because of the confusing way that conversations are punctuated throughout the book. Standard punctuation suggests opening and closing quotation marks at the beginning and end of dialogue, and if dialogue spans paragraphs, there are quotation marks at the beginning of each new paragraph. There were entire pages of dialogue with no quotation mark punctuation. It became very confusing to determine where the dialogue began or ended. Otherwise, it was a fascinating book and well worth the read.
