I usually say that all we’ve heard about the war is not all there is to it, as everyone who experienced it during that period did so differently. This story is drawn from the time of World War 2 based on the author’s and his family's experiences during that time. When his father, Colin, received a transfer from the bank he worked for to Burma, he was only a year old. And so his parents had to relocate from New Jersey to Burma.

The book began with his mother's narration of that experience, as he was a child and unaware of his surroundings. Upon their arrival in Burma, a strong sense of heat, filth, and dirt not common to their homeland welcomed them. That wasn't all; in this book, his family had to move several times to escape the Japanese invasion of Burma and discomfort, bringing them back to his mother's homeland, New Jersey. This book details everything that happened up to their return to America, New Jersey.

The book describes exciting adventures from three diverse narratives: his father's, his mother's, and his own perspectives, which made it even more exciting. I disliked nothing about A Leopard on My Roof: My World War II Childhood by Colin Arrott Browning. My favorite character in this book was little Colin; at such a young age, he was funny and smart, although he had to grow up too fast for his age. I can't count how many times I have chuckled at his antics and even his responses to adult conversations, which he frequently found himself in.

Another thing that made me engrossed in this book and helped me connect to the story, despite its historical backdrop, is the use of original photos from his childhood. I was able to connect more with the story and even the descriptions of places, especially of their time in Mussoorie, where he and his mom spent some time before reuniting with his father.

This book is deserving of a perfect star rating; therefore, I rate it five out of five stars. I found nothing to dislike about this non-fictional novel and was rather intrigued by the life that little Colin lived. Readers interested in historical fiction, non-fiction, and memoirs will enjoy this book, so I recommend it to them.
