Review of Marco Martinez book 1
Set in the post-Civil War era in the Wild West of America, Marco Martinez by Allan R.M. takes us on an adventure like no other. The novel feels no less than a Western movie.
We meet our hero, Marco Martinez, the best bounty hunter this side of the Rockies. Though the best at his job, Marco has a hole in his heart. The war has left him disillusioned. The loss of his brother has deeply impacted him. After Marco completes a successful job for Steven Collinsworth and brings in Marshall Madison, a family man, people start looking down on him. He no longer seemed to be esteemed highly. Thomas McDowell, his preferred employer, does not hire him either. Marco does not let this deter him. He goes to Sheriff Greenwood of Cotton Turnaround. To his astonishment, the sheriff hires him for a job. A Mexican outlaw named Bondelro and his gang of bandits have been striking terror in the frontier towns of the American Southwest. They have left a trail of terror. Moreover, they are conspiring against the Union. Marco is tasked with bringing him in. Little does he know that this assignment will change his life forever.
Will Marco be able to catch Bondelro? Will he be able to repair his reputation? Most importantly, will he find himself? Will the hole in his heart finally be filled?
To find out, read Allan R M.'s Marco Martinez. The first book in the series, the novel sets the tone for an action-packed adventure from the very beginning. Marco is a solitary hero. Joining him as he traverses West America is a treat. We feel his triumphs and despair at his losses. We are right by his side as he grows and begins to find himself. For me, the best part was when Frank Milagro joined him. I really enjoyed the camaraderie between them. I loved his interlude with the Native Americans. Along with Marco, I learned a lot from them. Aaron was simply amazing. I was surprised to see a White man being so easily accepted by the Indians.
Allan beautifully paints the milieu of post-Civil War America. Years after the war, the country was still mending. While many accepted the reality, some turned into outlaws, while others became bounty hunters. The West was wild back then. The Native Americans were striving to preserve their lives, lands, and heritage. Allan R.M. showcases all these aspects in his novel. His love for America is evident in his writing style.
Marco's journey is a hero's journey. I am intrigued to know more about his brother, Marvin. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I truly enjoyed Marco Martinez by Allan R.M. There is nothing that I disliked about this book. However, I did notice a few errors. These can be easily fixed with a round of editing. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. I had to take off a star due to the editing errors. I highly recommend it to fans of old Western movies and action-packed novels.
