This book tackles the realistic life of the three immigrant families who pursue their careers in spite of the challenges that may come their way. I would highly recommend you to read this book because you can gain life experiences and lessons that families may be undergone through. In other words, the author gains respect to the immigrants because he further elucidates the meaningful journey of the three families.

I would love to rate this 3.8 out of 4 stars. Keep it up! Can't wait to read another piece of literature that you would write. :)

This collection of immigrant's stories does sound quite touching and it's great that the stories felt real rather than imagined. Not sure it's in my taste, especially as I haven't got the experience but kudos to the author for achieving that.

Well written review and you make many valid points. I, too, agree that the cast of characters was a bit large and the constant time jumps were a bit hard to follow. It was interesting to see the characters develop and gave great insight into how the different ethnicities interacted from the Gold Rush to the years following World War II. I live in the Sacramento area and found it interesting to read about different places in the area.

yes...The review is so anonymous and about immigrants...basically the review invokes a strong reminiscence of Marquez...but stories about immigrants are quite challenging in the long run.

This book is about immigrants those who live in a country that is unknown to them....... the story about their survival and their experiences in America is greatly written by the author. This book must be read by immigrants living in any country because it depicts their feelings and emotions.

A little bit like Isabel Allende, too, except without the Spanish.
I don't read much historical fiction now, but I might read that one.

Tributaries plunged me back into northern California. The setting was drawn exquisitely, from the ranch to the city-I loved following the characters' complex lives with the backdrop of that era's (1959-1962) premonition of nation-changing events. I can't wait for the sequels...

I love books that discuss immigration and what it's like to move to a new country/culture. However, I'll have to give it some more thought because of your negative points about the style/number of characters/etc. Thanks for the review!

Great review! I also read this book and loved the story. I do agree the storyline was a bit bouncy at times. I commend the author for bringing to our attention issues that are still relevant today. Since this is the first in a series, maybe the writing will improve with the next one.
