Sometimes, history is kind to those who fight; other times, it manages to erase their memory. or at least to make them seem like nothing more than a legend. Simon Son Of Star by Ronen Tregerman follows a Jewish legend that, according to some coins, might be more than a legend. Read Simon Son Of Star and decide if Simon was real or just a legend created to inspire and justify a rebellion.

Set in Roman-conquered Israel, the book follows Simon ben Kosevah (also known as Simon bar Kochva—Simon Son of Star) during his crusade to free Israel. Inspiring several villages and more than one generation, Simon led the Israeli rebels for more than three years in their fight for freedom. Historians say this uprising cost Roman Emperor Hadrian more than one night's sleep and several soldiers. But there is nothing that Emperors and Generals love more than demonstrating their power. What happened to Simon? Did he ultimately succeed?

This historical fiction book takes the reader back in time and makes it seem like they are living and fighting with Simon and the rest of the Jewish rebels. I loved reading from Simon and Hadrian’s perspectives, as historical fiction books often focus on one character. Still, the reader gets to fully absorb and comprehend what happened during the rebellion, or at least get an idea. For those unfamiliar with Jewish history, the book might be confusing at the beginning, but as the story progresses, it becomes hard to put down the book.

The only negative thing I can say about this book is that it needs another round of editing, as I found more than ten errors. Because of everything I have said, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to history lovers, especially Jewish and Roman history. While the book does describe some violent scenes, there is nothing overly graphic.

Well, I reckon this here book, Simon Son Of Star, seems like a mighty fine read! It takes us way back in time to Roman-conquered Israel and tells the tale of Simon ben Kosevah, a Jewish legend who fought for freedom. It's a historical fiction that gives us a glimpse into the rebellion against Emperor Hadrian, and it's written with different perspectives, which adds to the excitement. Might need a bit more polish in the editing department, but overall, it's worth a good four out of five stars. If you're a history buff, especially interested in Jewish and Roman history, give this book a go. There's some violence in there, but nothin' too excessive. Authentic dialogue, felt natural and realistic.
