Not What Meets the Eye, written by Matrika Hay, is quite a wonderful read. It is hard to believe that it was one of the first works from the author. The story follows a woman named Antosha Scarlett, who is an archeologist. She had returned home from an excavation when she was attacked by an assassin at the museum. That attack had sparked a series of more hits on her as she traveled to a dig site that a world renowned archaeologist, Tombask Wilshire, invited her to work on. As she works on the site, she learns more about the secrets that the dirt was hiding, including what really happened to her parents long ago and the dark history of The Lost City.

Not What Meets the Eye kept me on my toes as I read. The way that everything was described in the book made me feel that a movie adaptation was expected from this book, and in all honesty, I wouldn't mind seeing one being made. All of the settings and characters were described in such great detail that it was hard not to get attached to them and feel as if you were really there. One little annoyance of mine while reading the book is that it changes the point of view between a couple of characters, and that does make it a little confusing in the beginning since we are just getting introduced to the characters of the story. Another thing that bothered me was the slowness in the beginning of the book, but I quickly didn't mind it at all as I reached the climax of the story because all the little details in the beginning had made more sense as I continued to read. As I read the book, my mind was constantly working, trying to come up with fun theories about the ins and outs, and who and what's in the story, which kept me wanting to read until the end to see if my theories were correct.

I rate this book a five out of five stars. The settings of the story were descriptive and made me lost in the world the author created. There are some spelling and grammar mistakes, but those do not happen very often and they don't distract from the story. The entire book was an emotional rollercoaster and made me feel all kinds of emotions, especially at the climax and the end.
