The Rock at the Bottom is an eye-opening novel. This book, by Cynthia Hilston, tells the story of a young man who grew up with a challenging childhood. He was raised by an alcoholic father who despised him. His mother had died in childbirth and his father had blamed him for it. As Stephen's story unfolds, we see the heartache and the abuse he has suffered. Growing up with such hatred, he makes some very poor decisions. This tale has so many hills and valleys as Stephen tries to make his mark in the world. He moves out on his own, becomes an author, finds love, and then tragedy finds him once again. Can he overcome his latest loss? Does he use his own experiences to write about, or does he use fantasy to escape his harsh reality?

This novel has so much going on. The plot has pain, mistakes, relationship woes, happiness, and finally, love again. I was thoroughly invested in Stephen and seeing him finally find what he was searching for. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how his story played out.

There was nothing I disliked about The Rock at the Bottom. The characters were likable and interesting. I was not surprised by the way Stephen's dad had felt about him and how he treated him. To me, although it was hard to read, that is reality in life. There was conflict within the relationships, as well as inner conflict.

I give this amazing novel five out of five stars. The book was well-edited and very engaging. The profanity was minimal so I believe that it will appeal to many readers. I found myself wanting to continue reading to see how Stephen overcomes all of his obstacles.

I highly recommend this wonderful book to readers of all ages. I feel that this storyline will appeal to many, regardless of their walk in life. The profanity is minimal so I don't believe that readers will find this book offensive. The characters make you want to root for their success. It was inspirational, as well as real. We all have struggles, and this book is just one example of how we can overcome what life hands us.
