The narrative spans various locations and characters during the war. It begins in Springfield, Illinois, and Munich, Germany, introducing the Gordon twins and the Gittelsohn brothers, who are facing different challenges. As the war progressed, Mo fell in love with Janey, a piano player whom he initially did not know had a physical disability. However, he remained in love with her nonetheless. Senator Royce's political endeavors intersect with the personal stories of the Gordon and Gittelsohn families. Amidst the horrors of the Holocaust, Aaron Gittelsohn's talents secure his family's survival. Meanwhile, Mo Gordon navigates military life in Burma, finding solace in memories of home and his love for Janey.

Circumstances of War by Robert John Gardner is a gripping narrative that intricately combines the lives of diverse characters amidst the backdrop of war. Set across different locations, the novel delves into the personal struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs of individuals facing the tumultuous circumstances of war. The narrative unfolds through a series of chapters, each focusing on different characters and their experiences. From the streets of Springfield, Illinois, to the concentration camps of the Germans and the battlefields of Burma, Gardner skillfully brings to life the varied perspectives and challenges faced by these characters. From political tensions in Washington, D.C., to the struggles of soldiers on the front lines, the novel offers a multifaceted exploration of the wartime experience.

Two aspects of the book particularly resonate with me. Firstly, there is the genuine love that Mo has for Janey. Secondly, the remarkable display of bravery exhibited by Aaron during his time in the camp leaves a lasting impression. In the face of adversity and unimaginable horrors, Aaron's courage served as an inspiration for both his fellow prisoners and people who knew of his story. These two elements—Mo's love for Janey and Aaron's bravery—contribute significantly to the richness and complexity of the storytelling, making the book a truly compelling read.

This heartwarming story is exceptionally well edited, and there are no criticisms to be made regarding the book. The book explored themes such as love, family, and sacrifice. Through compelling character dynamics and heartfelt interactions, Gardner highlights the importance of human connection and solidarity in times of crisis. Whether it's the bond between brothers, the love between partners, or the loyalty within families, these relationships serve as a source of strength and resilience amidst the chaos of war.

I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars primarily due to the compelling character of TR Royce. Despite being shielded by the influence of his father, Senator Royce, TR's decision to enlist in the military reflects exceptional courage. His choice to actively engage in the war, despite his privileged background, is truly commendable. TR's willingness to put himself in harm's way for the greater good exemplifies extraordinary bravery and selflessness, qualities that resonate powerfully throughout the story. I recommend the book to fans of historical fiction and those who enjoy multifaceted narratives.

I would love to understand the challenges the Gordon twins and the Gittelsohn brothers are facing and the journey of love Mo and Janey took in this plot.

I’m curious to see how the author balances these intimate moments with the broader historical events. TR Royce’s decision to enlist despite his privilege also adds an interesting layer. While I don’t typically enjoy reading war novels, the focus on human connection and resilience makes me want to consider giving this one a try.
