Review of The Abalone Ukulele
"Abalone Ukulele" by R. L. Crossland is a captivating book that revolves around individuals who are fascinated with the possession of ukulele, where countries like Japan, Korea, the US, and China are involved. The book is divided into five parts, where specific characters are introduced with their pivotal roles in the plot.
The book begins with the introduction of Korean Army Captain Jung-hee Yi, who is patriotic and was assigned to deliver silver coins to China. With a deceptive step from Japan, he flees to the US in disgrace. As the plot moves, we are introduced to Seaman Hobson, who was quite captivated by the ukulele. Along with his colleague, he lands in the US, where his path crosses with Yi. Will Hobson help Yi return lost silver coins to China? Will Yi ever be able to return to his homeland, Korea? The introduction of Clementine, who was quite informative on the movement of ships, added a layer of mystery to the plot. Will she help or ditch Hobson in his plans? The writing skills of Crossland shone throughout the book, which was weaved with mystery, romance, deception, and patriotism. His use of grammar was perfect, with no errors. From the beginning to the end of the book, it was quite evident that it was exceptionally well edited. The pacing of the plot and character development were perfect, which made it easy for me to grasp the story. I appreciate the author's attention to the detailing of the cultures of the countries included in the book. The book also mentioned a glossary with a list of characters involved in this story and the aftermath of the war in history.
With my opinions above, I rate "Abalone Ukulele" five out of five stars. There was nothing specific to dislike about this book. I would recommend this book to history and war story readers.
