Review of The Rock at the Bottom
The Rock at the Bottom Review.
I really enjoyed The Rock at the Bottom and would give it a 4 out of 5 stars. This novel is an easy read that you don’t want to put down until it is finished. You get everything you want out of a story; Family, Love, Loss and a happy ending. This story follows Stephen throughout his life and how bad things kept happening to him and how he dealt with them by writing. These events throughout his life also changed his outlook on basic childhood experiences like going to school, dating, and family.
While the beginning of was on the slower side, once you get past this you were drawn to knowing what happens next with these characters. You felt you were a part of the story like you were there with them experiencing and feeling the same thing and hoping for the best outcome. In the different stages of life with Stephen you felt like you were cheering him on and hoping for his moment to come when it never does. Unfortunately, it does not work out the way you want, and you are experiencing how he reacts to this and how much he keeps suffering from these unfortunate results.
You feel bad for Stephen because every time it seems that this next thing will be the one something would change. Fortunately for Stephen he always had his writing to get him through the bad times and he ends up succeeding in becoming a writer but that does not fix the issue and it becomes only a band aid. This would then set him up for a new downfall just like anyone dealing with addiction and tries a new persona and becomes Tristan. While I appreciate the viewpoint of dealing with addiction, the other characters were all dealing with their own demons but were not explained or dealt with addressing their issues.
It was the right place, right time meeting of Tristan and Lorna. They both suffered enough in their own personal lives that they were ready to be the people they wanted to be. While Tristan knew Lorna indirectly in a previous life as Laura, he tried to hide the reason behind his looks and his Tristan personality. His looks were the one thing he would not change until he was ready because he knew how she would feel and how he would need to deal with the pain again.
I was excited to see that Tristan and Lorna got their fairy tale ending. They both suffered so much and I wanted to see them become the people they wished they were through-out the novel. This novel showed that when life gives you a challenge it is about what you learn and not about the challenge itself.
