In Volume 1 of B.J. Salmond's Trial and Triumph, titled "Grudges and Grace," the story of William Chestnut is narrated by his daughter, Sarah, to her troubled grandson, Jefferson. Sarah shares this tale with Jefferson in the hopes that it will inspire him to change for the better and find motivation through his grandfather's experiences.
William Chestnut was born into a prosperous agricultural family in St. Louis, Missouri. However, he despised working on the farm and longed for a different life away from cultivating and harvesting crops. His disobedience led his parents to allow him to pursue his passion for owning a general store. After serving as a clerk for eight months, William's father provided him with a store and a loan to start his own business. Unfortunately, his business failed within a few months. He was frustrated because he was unable to secure a loan to keep his company running. He succumbed to his anger and physically attacked another businessman. This led to a court appearance, where William's history of violent outbursts resulted in severe punishment. What was the punishment? Did he succeed in his business? Get the book to learn more.
