Review of Malino: The Orphan Road
Malino was born in Sicily, Italy, in 1900. He became an orphan after his mother died giving birth to him and he ends up with Grillo, his abusive caretaker. At the age of 13 years old, Malino set his sights on the city of Palermo to escape his past and start a life for himself.
This story showcases how a person who had no family and grew up in the worst situation is still able to thrive in life. The author did an incredible job of crafting a character like Malino. Since he had no real mentor in his life, he’s learning about life and himself as he goes on this journey. I’m going to let readers know that this journey is a wild ride. Malino will encounter good people, bad people, and people with evil intentions that come off as good. The themes vary in this story from family, romance, betrayal, gangs, political discord, and war—Malino is in the middle of all of it.
Malino would not be the person he is without the supporting characters in this book. Regardless of their intentions, they helped Malino develop as a person. One thing I love about this book is the introduction of Ricci and Luigi as Malino’s business partners and best friends. Antonio is another character who Malino met when he first arrived in Palermo. The book, to me, gets better once Major Capelli, the Capo, and Captain Vitali’s stories are introduced.
Malino: The Orphan Road is action-packed with lots of fighting and killing scenes. The descriptions of deaths and sexual acts are explicit and raw. One of the characters was sexually abused as a minor and that story was hard for me to read. I would not recommend this book to any who may be triggered by those lewd details.
I had such a good time following Malino’s journey and the person he became. From beginning to end, I was entertained and each chapter held my attention. Unfortunately, I did find many spelling and grammar errors, so I cannot say it was well-edited. Other than that, I disliked absolutely nothing about this story. I’m giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. If you love books that take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions with lots of action and mystery, then this book is perfect for you.
