Review of Killing Abel
Killing Abel by Michael Tieman is a fictional book based on the Bible. The author narrates the events that took place, starting from the fall of man to the flood and Noah's arch. He tries to put across the notion that the simpler explanation is most likely the right one. People tend to read into things or blame God for their circumstances by saying that it is God's will. However, Michael Tieman emphasizes that we choose our paths. He tells the story of Adam and Eve as simply as he can. The author chooses the simplest explanation to explain their choices and circumstances.
The story begins with Eve in the garden of Eden. She is talking to Lucifer, who was an angel at the time but had taken the form of a serpent. The author believes that Lucifer was meant to guide Adam and Eve before the fall. Michael Tieman also finds various explanations for different occurrences in the Bible.
What I loved most about the book was how educational it was about the Bible. As a Christian, there were a lot of things that I failed to grasp about the Bible in all my years. This book enables one to learn more about the Christian religion while entertaining them. I also love that the fiction was realistic. For example, when Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden, Adam assumed that Eve would follow him no matter what. However, Eve was not willing to follow Adam sheepishly, and this caused Adam great confusion such that he left, and they did not speak for days.
Although I enjoyed reading most of the book, there were some parts of the writing that I did not like. For example, after the fall of man, when the Cainites and Sethites had interbred, the author said the men were "naive" and the women "seduced them." This was sexist because the book is about people choosing their paths in life, yet the blame is on the women.
I give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. The narrative had a great start and was flowing. However, at some point, the author jumped to a whole different set of events. This distorted the flow, and for this, I deducted one star. The book seemed professionally edited since I did not find any errors.
This book is best suited for those who are looking to learn the foundation of the Christian religion without having to read the Bible. This book provides a fun read that does not require translation and is not tedious. I would not discourage any religious groups from reading the book since it does not impose on their beliefs.
