The Serbian Forces of the Republika Sprska have intensified their campaigns around Sarajevo, and the city is currently under siege. When the rebels attack a United Nations convoy carrying weapons and use one of them to bring down a helicopter, Lieutenant Cody Bridger and Lieutenant JG Perry Judd are sent to locate and take aerial photographs of their military strongholds. The two Navy Aviators are heading into a no-fly zone without an escort. Unfortunately, Cody and Perry are captured when a missile hits their plane. Carl Bridger, his grandfather, has to initiate a non-borderline rescue attempt, which will bring some of the most extraordinary minds together.

The Last Raider was authored by Spencer Anderson and published by Synergy Books Publishing. The fascinating historical fiction follows Carl Bridger, the current owner of the Rocking Double-B Ranch, as he formulates and executes a plan to rescue his grandson from cruel rebels. It is a daring operation where the odds of survival are minimal. Besides, it involves violating several federal and international rules, meaning no place might be safe when it is over. The story vividly and realistically demonstrates the importance of little acts of kindness. In this way, even the secondary characters were indispensable.

One thing I like most about Spencer’s writing is the employment of vivid descriptions. The cockpit is one of the places where the reader will experience a rollercoaster of emotions. One moment you are on the ground running the preflight sequence, and before long, you are in the air. You never know what each flight will bring. From system failures to encountering fierce opponents, there is always something to cause anxiety. In addition, desperate moments at times called for unconventional solutions, generating great uncertainty.

The other thing I enjoyed about the book was the combination of several themes. There was a flourishing love story, integration of the human mind and technology, and inspiring loyalty. Love was the most predominant theme. Gifford, Cody’s father, acknowledged he was afraid, but the need to rescue his son motivated him immensely. The confession of the characters’ fears made the book believable. In addition, I enjoyed the heavy dose of humor sprinkled throughout. It lightened the grave nature of the rare, bloodcurdling mission.

I disliked nothing about the book. The characters were realistically developed, and the plot was unique and intriguing. Editing was professionally done as I discovered only three errors in the book. Consequently, I heartily rate the book four out of four stars. Every ardent reader of historical fiction will enjoy poring over this book. It offers a rare opportunity to fly in a modified B-25 Mitchell bomber and be part of an extraordinary rescue operation. Besides, readers will meet many outstanding characters, including the owner of the biggest heart in Italy.

Normally I love historical fiction, but unfortunately current book hits all the points of the only one exception I avoid like plague. Military, weapons, violence and blood of recent conflicts - I really dislike war stories, therefore I will have to pass this book. Apologies and still congratulations on BOTD!
