WWII reshaped the world. The Second World War is a topic of avid interest for any history buff. Since my childhood, I had been drawn to war stories. WWII is my most favorite topic of discussion and debate. Naturally, I picked up Rescuing General Patton. I am more than glad to say that I was not disappointed. If there is any book that should be made into a motion picture, it is Curtis Stephen Burdick's Rescuing General Patton.

In his action-pact book, Burdick brings to us a riveting tale set during WWII. General Patton's granddaughter surprises John Harding with a well-worn manilla envelope during a book signing event. The envelope set him on a course to unravel a mystery that was shelved as top-secret during WWII. General Patton was one of the key players of the war. If not for him, the outcome of the war might not have turned out as it did. Imagine, what would happen if Patton fell into the enemy's hands? What would be the state of the world if the Nazis won?

I have to mention that I myself was nearly convinced that the book was a true account of events. Yes, it was that well-researched. If the author had not explicitly mentioned that it is a work of fiction, I would have no qualms accepting it to be a true story. I applaud the author for his realistic and riveting writing style.

The author presented a fair view of the war. He depicted the dark and good sides of both the Allied and Axis Powers. Every soldier is expendable in war. It is only the key players who actually matter. This is the dark truth. The author showcases this in an amazing manner. I loved the way he showed that even the Allied Forces made mistakes. Those mistakes even cost lives. I also loved the way he showed that even the German officers, at least those from the Prussian Wehrmacht, had a sense of honor. I have to mention that the evil nature of the SS was quite evident.

All the characters in the book were fleshed-out. I loved Peter Pizzio and Rosen. They loved their country and men. Their friendship and bravery are admirable. Pizzio led his men with a fierce determination and an unmatched leadership quality. Captain Moretta was great as well. Giuseppe was incredible. The valor and fearlessness he showed was something very few men had. Though Gorski had a smaller role, he won our hearts.

The battle scenes kept me on edge. I was at the scene of action with Pizzio's men. I was scared for them. I was elated when they won something. However, like them, my elation was tinged with sorrow. Like Pizzio, I was incensed with the planning committee for their errors and nearly impossible plans.

This is a book that is best suited for fans of WWII stories. Anyone who likes to read fast-paced and action-packed novels would absolutely love it. Only people who become queasy after reading about wars or are very skeptical of violence should give this book a skip.

Overall, I rate Rescuing General Patton, 4 out of 4 stars. The plot, writing style, characterization, and editing were exceptional. I found few negligible errors. It is a perfect book that should soon be made into a movie.
