“I Am a Soldier, First and Always”: The Distinguished Career of Winfield Scott Hancock by James Harold Kelly is a gripping historical fiction military story featuring the life and career of Lieutenant General Winfield Scott Hancock. From the first page, I knew this was going to be an action-packed story, and I was not let down at all! Filled with battle scenes and military tactics, this book was gripping.

The writing created scenes that were so real, I could visualize them. I was extremely impressed with the author’s ability to create these pictures with his words. The author, James Harold Kelly, is a student of military history, and his knowledge showed in his impressive writing.

This story made the devastating consequences of war a reality for me. I was blown away by the situations, the death, and destruction described. The story was gritty and graphic, fully immersing me into the reality of war. I would like to call out to readers that this book does have scenes with descriptive gore, blood, and bodily harm and may not be appropriate for all readers.

This story follows the life of Winfield Scott Hancock. I was thrilled at how the author described both his military experiences as well as his family life. Hancock was very connected to his family, keeping in constant contact with them during his time away due to the war. It was heartbreaking to read about him losing family and friends. The authors writing during these times truly conveyed the emotions that Hancock felt. I was deeply moved by these scenes and appreciated the writing.

Winfield Scott Hancock takes command of a troop during the battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. He was not next in line for the position but after the death of General Reynolds, he was chosen by General George Meade to take the lead. This created an interesting start to his military career, and I enjoyed reading about it. Hancock had new and innovative ideas on the tactics of war, making decisions that were different, and creating positive outcomes from his battles. He fought the Confederate army with bravery and razor-sharp decisiveness, earning the nickname “Hancock the Superb”. After the Civil War, he embarks on a short political career, running for President of the United States in 1880.

I rated “I Am a Soldier, First and Always”: The Distinguished Career of Winfield Scott Hancock by James Harold Kelly a four out of four stars because it is well-written and creates a gripping tale for the reader. I found this book to be well-edited and did not see any grammatical errors. It did have gory scenes that may upset some readers, but it was fast-paced and filled with action. I believe that this book will appeal to military historical fiction fans that enjoy the tactics and battles of war.
