[Following is a volunteer review of "Lily White Lie" by Connie Chappell.]

This book is probably one of the best examples of cozy mysteries. Not exactly fast-paced, it nevertheless maintains a smooth and easy flow from the start to end. Even though I enjoy fast thrillers, there was not a single instance when I felt bored.
In a similar manner, the plot itself was not very thrilling. Yet it contained elements of adventures and suspense in plenty. The solution took longer than I expected, with Wrenn going on and on about her research on the watch. Nonetheless, I found myself glued to the pages for the entire time.
The best gift from Chappell for her readers was most likely the character of Bret Kilmore. As viewed from Wrenn’s perspective, this enigmatic character holds much of the attraction. His dazzling charm and easygoing manner hint at some ulterior motive. The readers realize there is more to him than meets the eye, and this keeps the anticipation alive. The aspect I best liked was the gradual development of the chemistry between Wrenn and Bret. Bret’s casual flirting and Wrenn’s stern demeanor put these two in a unique relation. I was eagerly waiting to see how their story turns out, and the book did not disappoint me in the least.
Lily White Lie goes a long way in the aspect of symbolism. The Easter lilies and the mysterious pocket-watch hide an altogether different story within the main narrative. Another remarkable aspect was how Wrenn’s research bridges the gap between the past and the present. As the book ends, the readers get a feeling of coming full circle. This makes the read quite fulfilling.
I can come up with only one point that I did not appreciate. After much time spent pondering on the mysteries, the solution is presented quite abruptly. This throws the readers off-balance because they were probably expecting something more mind-altering. However, the suspenseful climax more than makes up for that.
All things considered, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. A few typing errors did not hamper my reading. I would recommend this book to those who like simple mysteries and cozy reading experience. There are no violent scenes, so it would suit both young and adult audience.
