Review by HRichards -- The McCoys Before The Feud
The McCoys Before the Feud tells the story of Tommy McCoy, a Confederate veteran, at the end of the Civil War. Tommy finds out that many Southerners living in his area have lost their valuables at the hands of greedy Northerners. Incensed by the poor treatment, Tommy and his kith and kin decide to execute several raids on Northern storehouses to get some of the goods back. What transpires is a lot of thorough planning and plotting as the McCoys try to figure out how to steal back a fortune.
This book is incredibly well written. There were barely any grammar errors that I noticed, and one was simply a typo. The heist plots move along believably, and the relationships between the characters is understandable. Tommy is a sympathetic character, and the reader ends up rooting for the Southern veterans to be successful. There is little objectionable violence in the book, and there is almost no other content that would warrant a warning. The book feels professionally edited, and I would have no problem recommending it to any age reader. Those who like Western literature or historical books should really enjoy this tale. With polished writing and a strong plot, this book shines for those looking for a fun, adventurous read. There isn’t a lot of deep contemplation on the characters, but the book is driven more by the plot than a lot of heavy characterization. Considering the source material, I was expecting a much darker book. Instead, the novel is a fun read.
My only complaint with the book is about the chapter titles. They tend to tell you exactly what happens in each chapter before you read anything. It might have been better if the author had just forgone the titles entirely and just left the chapters numbered. Aside from that minor issue, I could find no other flaws in the book worth mentioning.
I ended up giving The McCoys Before the Feud4 out of 4 stars. It is an exciting romp through history that has little objectionable content. I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this book is. This being the first of a series, I feel like the rest of McCoy’s novels are probably worth a look.
