Great review! I like war novels and this one seems like a war novel with a lot of suspense and action. I am particularly interested in knowing how the protagonist manages his situation. I like to read this book. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, Rolf has really gone through a lot - he loses his family and his identification. Then, he tries to begin anew at a Polish refugee camp in Australia, but his nightmares might give away his German identity. It's great to hear that the author developed his characters well and you felt emotionally invested in Rolf (even shedding some tears!). I love when author give you some food for thought and help remind us about the hardships soldiers face. Sometimes, I do like a good war story, but I don't enjoy gory scenes, so this might not be for me. I'm glad you enjoyed this one, though, and thank you for sharing!

After reading the sample text of the book and also the review, Refugee by Reece Pocock, would be a good book to continue reading. The sample text I read needs to be looked at again for editing mistakes. I found several. The story itself of a German in postwar Europe, trying to live in Australia as a refugee rather than go back to his homeland was so interesting. At first he thought that passing himself off as a Polish man would get him through. But of course, as soon as he had a nightmare and began speaking German, the other refugees accused him of being a Nazi and so he shares his story of how he became a refugee and why. I enjoy reading stories about WWII and this intrigues me because it is written about a German who was in the war, fighting for Germany under Hitler, who had become a maniacal dictator, and through this book recognizing that some Germans who did not support Hitler, being forced to fight for the Nazis and the Gestapo.

Oops, our Rolf is in big trouble now. Trying to leave everything behind but then it all keeps coming back. That's tough luck for Rolf.

I do not enjoy war stories so I am not reading this book, although I am sure it must be a great read. Great review.

This book sounds like an interesting historical fiction novel, which is a genre I really like. I am curious as to the reactions of the Poles if they find out who he is. Yes, not all the soldiers who fought in WWII was because they wanted.

Great review. This sounds like a good book dealing with a soldier with PTSD and how he deals with life after the war. Especially tough to be pretending to be Polish among Polish refugees in Australia. Not my kind of book but sounds good if you like books like this.

What feels like first-hand details, readers experience the horrors and challenges many faced both during and post war, alongside Rolf, a WWII soldier, in today's Historical Fiction BOTD. Prepare for an emotional ride as Rolf seeks to rid himself of pain and start a new life. However, can this be accomplished while living on enemy ground?

Thank you for this helpful review! While it's not for me, I am happy that you enjoyed it so much. Also, great to hear about the professional editing! :-)

Sounds interesting! War trauma is common among soldiers. I can't imagine living with trauma as a refugee without a family to support you. I can foresee the flood of emotions here. Thank you for your review!

Thanks for your review. It sounds like you really enjoyed this novel about the effects of WWII. Thanks for the heads up about the goriness and the sadness of this tale.

It sounds like the author did good job of developing his characters. He clearly thoroughly researched this time period before writing.
