What a Superhero Toni is! Not only can he save animals that are in trouble, but he can also dance, run, sing, swim and complete household chores. When you start to read this picture book one will find that Toni is just like any child who just happens to be a superhero. This superhero doesn’t need to save the world but wants to be with his friends and family doing many activities.

Everyone has a ‘Superhero’ in their lives that does ordinary things. A superhero does not have to do extraordinary activities but can just be a neighbor, family member or friend. We all have the ability to listen, help or give a hug to people. I am not looking for someone who can fly, blast/knock a hole in a wall or save the world. But a hero is someone who takes the time to spend a few minutes with you. What does Superhero mean to you

The illustrations are excellent! Debbie Kefke did a wonderful job in giving children colorful pictures that keep their eyes on the illustrations. The simple sentences give those reading the book help with what Toni is doing when he is just hanging out with friends and family. Also, the book brings the racial problem this world is watching in the news front and center. Toni and his friends don’t care about the color of their skin – they just want to have fun with each other because of their ability to like what they offer to the friendships. People now days want to make too much about the color of your skin and R.D. Base and Debbie Kefke made sure that young children see that friendships are not based on your skin color. Have fun with people because you want to be with them and enjoy their companionship.

Parents will love to sit and read this book with their child because the colorful pictures would allow the child the ability to tell a story. Then as the child starts to read they have the short sentences to make the story complete.

Parents and teachers could use this short story as an educational tool as children are starting to read. I found no errors within this book and give Toni the Superhero a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Kudos to R.D. Base as she gave us a short story that shows that even superhero’s are ordinary people.
