Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is a children’s mystery and detective story. Inca the cat has finally become the sleuth she wanted to be and has formed a detective agency. Inca finds herself traveling the world helping solve mysteries. In this episode, Inca is traveling deep in the jungle looking for a lost/stolen sword.
The story is set in Sri Lanca, where Inca is vacationing with her human family and siblings. Inca and her colleagues form new friendships with a mother elephant and her child and Inca’s distant leopard cousins, soliciting their help in locating a very valuable sword which was stolen from a museum. During their search they learn why this artifact is so important. The importance of teamwork is also revealed through this journey.
The writing style of this author is for children ages 7 -12. I particularly enjoy how this author allows the characters to introduce themselves and give a little background information before the story begins. The transitions in this story are smooth and intriguing for young readers. The illustrations are perfect for the imagination. I appreciate the diary-style format and feel this is a good example to young readers of how to keep a personal diary.
As with previous stories, the events in this story use animals to speak; however, the characteristics can easily be seen in human traits. I believe that if those in the educational field as well as parents would engage with their children in reading this material something can be learned and passed on about human behavior. The fact that they must work together to achieve their goal is a way to teach children the value of teamwork in their daily lives. I also feel that this series develops relationships as young readers become aware of who the characters are and anticipate what new adventure they will read about with each new book. This book is another teaching tool as well as a good read.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars as it was a pleasure to read. I don’t usually read children’s stories, however, this series has proven to be one that I look forward to exploring. The story is not only entertaining but educational. This is a must have in a child’s library. R.F. Kristi’s background, interest in animals and desire to reach children is evident throughout all her books. Her desire to give back to communities provides an example for all of us.
