Toni the Superhero by R.D Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke takes you on an adventure with Toni – an everyday young boy who shows how going above and beyond to do everyday tasks and taking care of oneself makes you a superhero! Geared towards preschool aged children, Toni the Superhero receives 4 out of 4 stars for its creativity, colorful illustrations, and positive message.

Toni, a young African American boy, appears to be your average child. He is anything but average, however, as he is a superhero! Donned in his red superhero cape, Toni completes heroic deeds - like taking out the trash, helping others, cleaning, and eating healthy foods – all with a positive attitude! If these heroic tasks were left undone, the world would be a disaster! The creative nature that R.D. Base uses to convey the importance of caring for your surroundings, considering others, and taking care of yourself is sure to resonate with the intended young audience.

Debbie Hefke uses colorful illustrations that add to the creative adventures of Toni as he completes his superhero tasks. These illustrations are unique, creative, and relevant to the story and add a layer of joy to this book. Additionally, the pictures reinforce the message that Toni’s heroic feats are ones that the reader can also accomplish if he or she wishes to be a superhero like Toni. Through the illustrations, even the illiterate child can still explore and enjoy Toni’s heroic adventures on his or her own.

The positive message that Toni the Superhero communicates is one in which every child can relate. Helping others, caring for the environment, and staying healthy are all core values that everyone can achieve. Staying healthy is an important message that is conveyed to the young audience. Toni’s willingness to eat his vegetables may encourage a child to go on a superhero adventure by eating his or her healthy foods! Often an opportunity to help in one way or another goes unnoticed or ignored. R.D. Base highlights these everyday opportunities that can become superhero deeds. In doing so, hopefully the audience is more likely to have an increased awareness of these opportunities and willingness to complete them with a positive, giving manner. Toni shows the reader that he or she can also be a superhero!

The adventures that Toni shares in R.D. Base’s Toni the Superhero leave the reader excited and wanting more. Encouraging children to recognize that they too can be superheroes is a phenomenal and noteworthy topic. Hopefully Toni and his red cape will have many, many more superhero quests!
