Review of The Hero of Hawk's Nest Beach: A Sea Turtle Rescue
The Hero of Hawk's Nest Beach: A Sea Turtle Rescue by Barbara Gervais Ciancimino, illustrated by Diana Delosh, is an interesting children's book that teaches selflessness. The story is about Finn, who is a regular, everyday dog, and his best friend, little Mutt. They both enjoy spending every summer together chasing seagulls and playing with children at Hawk’s Nest Beach. In this particular summer, they spotted children who had caught a crab, but little Mutt accidentally knocked the pail containing the crab into the ocean. The girl whose pail had been knocked over cried, and Finn felt bad for her and jumped into the water to search for it. In the process, he saw something moving at the bottom of the nearby boat piling. Finn's character teaches young children the ability to recognize when someone is in danger and to have clear judgment on whether or not to respond. I very much appreciated the fact that being regular doesn't mean you aren’t important or valuable. It can even be the best thing to be in life.
The colorful illustrations, which showed exactly what was happening in the story, are what made me love this book more. Young children do love such illustrations. Another thing is the teachings and fun facts about Kemp's Ridley sea turtles towards the end of the book. It made me realize I didn't have that much knowledge about them.
It’s worth mentioning that the book is short, which is a perfect fit for children aged 3 to 8 years. I struggled a bit reading the text, as it was difficult to zoom in on the words. I didn't notice any grammatical errors in the book. Thanks go to the editors' impeccable editing. For the reasons above, I rate this book at 4 out of 5 stars. I deducted one star because of the small font size that made me struggle to read it. Other than the font size, I had nothing else to dislike about the book. Otherwise, this is a good children's book that I highly recommend.
