A young boy who loves superhero's leads us through a day in his life in this gloriously illustrated learn-to-read book.
Toni the Superhero is a tale of a regular kid who loves superhero's, and wears his superhero costume around the house whatever he is doing. Toni has fun playing with his friends and flying around but is also happy helping out his mum with mundane chores. Author R.D. Base creates a story that helps young readers at learn-to-read stage gain confidence encouraging them to read a short sentence on each page. Each sentence is constructed with simple words and the engaging, colorful illustrations by Debbie J. Hefke help young readers decipher the sentences.
This book is a refreshing change as it really has no underlying tale of morality or long term life lesson. It is simply a tale of a young boy who loves to dress in his superhero outfit, red cape and eye patch and pursue normal daily activities. Toni likes animals, art, swimming, dancing and playing with friends. Toni also enjoys reading and spending time with his mum and helping her with things like cleaning and washing dishes.
There are many learn-to-read books on the market that rely heavily on elaborate fictional characters in fantastical settings, it's so nice to read one that highlights a normal little boy that has fun and helps his mother, and is happy in that environment. Children love characters with super special abilities, and the combination of super Toni and regular chores and activities makes this book something fun and special. What I like most about this book is the choice of activities selected by R.D. Base for Toni, they are wholesome and balanced. I especially like the fact that Toni likes food, from the illustrations lots of different types of food. Toni is undoubtedly a good role model for all you children. Throughout this book, no matter what Toni is doing, he is wearing his superhero outfit. Showing our young readers that even everyday activities can play a part in superhero fun.
Toni the Superhero is the first in a planned series of books and I look forward to the next installment!. Having five children, some of whom are still in the learn-to-read stage, I found this book be a great addition to the library.
This book gets a 4 out of 4 stars.
