Review of Shelbo’s Adventures in Technology: A Trip to the Dentist
Shelbo’s Adventures in Technology: A Trip to the Dentist is a very fun and informative book that is designed to help kids learn all about dentists. In the book, the titular character goes to a regular dentist appointment. The dentist’s assistant checks her teeth over and takes some x-rays, and then the dentist comes in to fill a cavity. Shelbo is nervous, but both the dentist and the assistant calmly explain everything as they are doing it, and she has a great visit.
I am a big fan of educational books, especially books that help children prepare themselves for real-life experiences. All three of my young children have been to the dentist at this point, but my youngest has only been in the waiting room so far. He is only two, so his first actual check-up is yet to come. After reading this book with him, he is pretty pumped about having his very first dentist appointment.
All of the illustrations were very colorful and fun to look at. Of course, my toddler’s favorite picture was the tooth that shows up in the background of all of the pages that have text on them. He kept asking to see another tooth when we would finish a page. My older kids liked it too, but since they’ve already gotten comfortable with the dentist, it was less impactful for them.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this book. It was the perfect thing to read with a little boy who is working on growing his very last baby teeth. I wholeheartedly rate Shelbo’s Adventures in Technology: A Trip to the Dentist a solid five out of five stars. If you have young children, I’d recommend picking up a copy of this book to help prepare them for a lifetime of healthy teeth!

In Shelbo’s Adventures in Technology: A Trip to the Dentist, Michelle L. Dean crafts a whimsical yet insightful journey that merges the wonders of childhood curiosity with the marvels of modern technology. This imaginative tale is not just a children’s story—it's a gentle guide, an educational tool, and a delightful adventure rolled into one beautifully illustrated book.
At the heart of this story is Shelbo, a bright and inquisitive young girl who finds herself nervous about an upcoming dental appointment. For many children, the thought of sitting in a dentist’s chair can be daunting, if not terrifying. But Shelbo is not just any ordinary child—she’s guided by a love for discovery and a spirit fueled by imagination. Through Dean’s warm storytelling, Shelbo transforms her fear into fascination, thanks to the magic of technology.
What sets this book apart is its seamless integration of science and story. As Shelbo embarks on her dental journey, she is introduced to various technological tools used in dentistry. From X-ray machines to digital scanners, each piece of equipment becomes less intimidating and more like a fascinating invention from a sci-fi adventure. Dean’s clever narrative voice turns the dental visit into a captivating tour of innovation, making it both comforting and exciting for young readers.
The real beauty of Dean’s work lies in her ability to educate without ever sounding didactic. Children are subtly introduced to STEM concepts, particularly in the realm of health technology, all while following a relatable protagonist on a real-world journey. By framing the dentist visit as an adventure, Dean invites readers to replace fear with curiosity—a message that resonates beyond the dental chair and into everyday challenges.
The illustrations are another standout feature. Bright, expressive, and full of life, they mirror Shelbo’s wide-eyed wonder and help bring the advanced tools and dental setting to life. The artistic design matches the stylish tone of the book, balancing playfulness with clarity. Each image not only captures the essence of the narrative but also reinforces the educational elements, making it easier for young minds to grasp complex ideas.
Michelle L. Dean deserves applause for creating a children’s book that respects the intelligence of its audience. Shelbo’s Adventures in Technology doesn't oversimplify or shy away from technical terms—instead, it introduces them in a context that’s understandable and intriguing. Parents and educators alike will appreciate this approach, as it opens up space for further discussion and exploration of science, medicine, and technology at home or in the classroom.
But beyond the technological aspects, what truly makes Shelbo’s story shine is its emotional core. Shelbo is not fearless—she is human. She feels nervous, asks questions, and looks for reassurance. It’s her journey from anxiety to empowerment that gives the story its heart. Young readers will see themselves in Shelbo and, perhaps, feel a little braver the next time they have to face something unfamiliar.
In a world where technology can often feel distant and impersonal, Shelbo’s Adventures in Technology: A Trip to the Dentist brings it back down to earth—in the most delightful, child-friendly way. It reminds us that at the intersection of innovation and imagination lies the power to ease fears, build confidence, and inspire the next generation of thinkers, dreamers, and doers.
This book is not just a story—it’s a spark. And for any child (or adult) who’s ever been anxious about visiting the dentist, it offers a comforting message: with a little knowledge and a lot of imagination, even the scariest journeys can turn into the greatest adventures.
Verdict:
A charming and educational masterpiece that turns fear into fascination—Shelbo’s Adventures in Technology is a must-have for any young reader’s library.
