Review of Wow Baseball for kids
Title: Wow Baseball for Kids!
Author: Logan Kimmel
This uplifting and warm instructional book encourages young people (or old) to delve into the world of baseball. Immediately, the warmth and enthusiasm of his writing struck me, especially with the bright, sunny cover illustration, the word 'summer' as the fourth word of the introduction, and the 'sun warms your face' in the first sentence of chapter one. This tone draws the reader in, and the feel is breathless from the word go.
Logan Kimmel teaches and explains the game's basics and describes its history, international appeal, famous people involved, and possible future. It is a complete sporting 'world'.
I have to say that I was expecting a step-by-step instruction book on how to play it, from how to stand, hold the bat, and hold the ball to game strategies in detail. I was surprised that it was more generalised than this. I suppose to properly learn how to play, practical lessons must be attended.
I would have appreciated some pictures, especially of the famous players involved in the game, preferably in action. I turned the pages eagerly, hoping to see one. In my opinion, the book was a tad remiss in this regard.
Apart from this, I thought the book was good. It was excellently edited and was easy and interesting to read. There was a nice balance of fact and instruction without becoming too heavy. I come from Britain, where football has the same stature, so I understand his enthusiasm. Although I am not a baseball fan, I recognise that this read would be an excellent addition to a school library or as a gift to a budding baseball player.
As I mentioned, I am disappointed about the lack of pictures and am not a baseball fan, so I will award this book four stars out of five. It is a short and enthusiastic book and not difficult to read.
