Joey Kelly and the Astonishing Discovery of Veiled Lake was a fun book for younger readers. I would recommend this for kids between the ages of 8-12. It tells the story of four young adventurers who discover a secret lake. The lake is home to many mythical creatures and characters that are trapped on the islands. The teens are all children of researchers, and they have their own special skills that come in handy on their explorations.

This is a fun story for kids who want to learn more about history. There are multiple characters from mythology, and Blackbeard also makes an appearance. The explorers use their talents to formulate strategies and resolve conflicts. This helps teach children that everyone has different strengths that all come in handy in life. Also, there are a few pictures included, which is a nice addition because some of the characters are creatures that don’t exist in real life. Depending on their interests, the readers may not have heard about these creatures before picking up this book.

The author does a really good job of creating interest in the characters that the team meets along the way. Medusa and Hercules become mainstays of the book, with both of them sharing their history and helping to drive the story along. I liked this approach to telling the backstory, which the main characters would not have reason to know otherwise.

There was a great deal of care put into this book, including excellent editing. There were very few mistakes, which I appreciated. It is noted that there will be a second book, which I am interested in reading, because while the story comes to a resolution for the main characters, there are still some parts that haven’t been resolved, including picking up their dog from one of the islands.

Overall, this was a fun book, with a lot of different historical elements. For this reason, I’m giving it a 5 out of 5 stars. I wouldn’t have changed anything about this book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. This is a good book for young readers who like adventure and a sense of fantasy.

This book seems like a great pick for young readers who love adventure and mythical creatures. The idea of kids with different skills discovering a secret lake full of historical figures like Blackbeard and Hercules is intriguing. I really like how the author put in history while keeping the story fun and engaging. It sounds like a solid choice for kids who enjoy fantasy and learning something new. I’d definitely consider picking it up, especially with the promise of a sequel!
