Review of Pixylations
The story begins in the Faerie Realm in Ireland, where Faela, a mischievous pixie, sets herself apart from others with her imaginative nature and love for unique adventures. Despite her unusual ways, Faela values compassion and kindness, and her only friend in the realm is a gnome named Scuff.
Unhappy that the efforts of the Faerie Realm are invisible to humans, she yearns for acknowledgment. Discontent with being unnoticed by humans, she revels in creating chaos among the rude and insensitive humans by deploying prohibited pixy magic. Therefore, it is not a surprise when most from her realm, who despise her, are delighted to report her misdoings and set her for trial before the Seelie High Court, the governing body of the Faerie Realm. Banishment would translate to losing all the fairy powers and a scary fate with Pooka, a shape-shifting goblin.
Much to her relief, as a last chance to redeem herself, she is assigned to be a 'house fairy' to a McBride family, thanks to intervention by Scuff. Little Ellie McBride has lost her mother. Faela's task is to bring joy and courage to Ellie's heart. As Faela immerses herself in the human world, she learns more about human emotions and finds herself torn between her life as a fairy and the world of humans. Pooka's interest in making Faela his bride and ensuring she fails in her task only adds to her challenges.
Track Faela's journey of self-discovery in Pixylations by Joe Laudati. It not only captivates through vivid storytelling and compelling illustrations but also immerses readers in the intertwining magical world of leprechauns, fairies, elves, gnomes, and goblins. The well-crafted characters, evolving plot, and concise yet engaging writing infused with suspense ensure an enthralling read. It offers a simple yet profound perspective on navigating internal struggles, societal prejudices, grief, and challenging relationships. It was not surprising to know that this was originally planned for a movie. I loved how the writing transports the reader to a fantasy world.
Each chapter is crisp and eventful, making it a perfect book for parents to read to their young children over several sittings. I'm curious whether the author has considered using bright and colorful pages to captivate younger readers. Although it is perfectly targeted at teenagers, it is also enjoyable for adults.
I did encounter a few errors while reading, but these were not the kind that distracted my reading in any way. I cannot think of anything negative about the storyline, structure, superbly drawn-out suspense, and the final culmination. Hence, I gladly rate this book five out of five stars. I highly recommend Pixylations to anyone who enjoys delightful fantasy novels.
