Review of My Special Day in Jasper,Texas USA
My Special Day in Jasper, Texas, USA by Jermaine Kenyatta is about a young colored girl named Martha who lives in Jasper, Texas. Martha’s mother decides to send her to an all-white school to be the first colored child in their town to break the segregation.
Martha, being eleven years old, is frightened to be leaving behind her friends and being the only colored child to walk into a hostile environment at that time. Fortunately, a teacher at Martha’s new school takes her under her wing and makes integrating easier than it could have been.
I liked that this story was based on true events. It looks into the past and shows how difficult life used to be. I cannot imagine how painful it must have been to live during those times. Especially as a member of the colored community and not being welcomed at the most basic of places, such as the museum mentioned in this story. I felt quite saddened by the hardships Martha, and others like her had to go through and face.
One thing that I did not like was the title of this book. To me, it is too long and unwieldy for such a short story. It also doesn’t match. This book takes place over several days, but the title itself implies that it takes place over just one day in time.
I honestly found nothing else that I disliked about this book. There were no noticeable errors, so I view this book as impeccably edited. As a result, I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found no reason to rate it any less, as my view of the title is merely my subjective opinion, and it does nothing to detract from the actual story itself.
I believe that this book will be most suitable for children who are seven–to eleven years old. The main character in this book, Martha, is herself eleven, so I think this age range will be most able to relate to this book. Much younger audiences might not be able to appreciate the historical aspects of this story or understand the hardships Martha faced. It would most likely be best for a parent to read this first, before handing it over to their child. That way, if the child has any questions, the parent should be better prepared to answer those potential questions. As a children’s book, there are no instances of questionable content within this story.
