Review of Khobe Koala and His Whittle Tummy Ache
Khobe is a cuddly koala who loves to snack on candy and cookies, but the little marsupial learns an important lesson after overindulging. Despite his bloated belly, Khobe has sweet dreams about nutritious fruits and veggies that come alive in Frank Whaley's delightful children’s book, Khobe Koala and His Whittle Tummy Ache. The picture book is the first of a four-book wellness series.
Whaley delivers a whimsical story that will amuse young readers while teaching them their colors and the nutritional benefits of fruits and vegetables. He utilizes alliteration to name the characters like “Cara the Carrot.” Whaley also cleverly coordinates the various veggies’ colors with the rhyming text throughout the book. For instance, when Khobe meets Cara, both the vegetable type and color appear in orange text. As the story progresses, Khobe encounters more healthy friends, including broccoli, green beans, peppers, and tomatoes.
Victoria Mikki illustrates the book beautifully. I especially like the creative way she features the food in her illustrations. For example, Betty wears a friendly smile, and the leafy portion of the Brussels sprout frames her face like hair. Khobe learns that "Tomatoes are good for your heart, hair, eyes, and bones; you will feel like a prince or princess sitting on a throne." The accompanying illustration features a perfectly plump tomato sitting on a purple throne of eggplants fit for royalty. At the end of the book, Khobe's dinner plate features a colorful array of healthy vegetables.
It is probably evident that there isn't anything I dislike about this entertaining children's book. It is professionally edited and correctly formatted for Kindle, allowing the lovely illustrations to fill the screen. I find it hard to imagine that readers of any age will turn the pages without smiling. Veggies never looked so cute!
I am pleased to rate this educational read-aloud story 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to ages 2-9; little ones can learn their colors as their older siblings digest nutrition facts while reading to them. Grandparents, teachers, and parents will also appreciate the informative and amusing picture book.
