I recommend A Witch’s Good Deed, For A Little Boy’s Greed to all children, ranging from ages zero to over 100 years young.

In a tiny one-room cabin, surrounded by flasks of pickled eyeballs and bottles of pink love potion, a witch prepares a mason jar of “stew”—I’m certain isn’t chicken soup—for a special purpose. Close by, a little boy walks alone through the woods in the middle of the night. A bit further away, the townspeople share rumors of a scary witch that lurks in the woods.

The witch, the boy, and the townspeople converge to enact a Halloween moral story. Written by Lukas Castillo, this modern-day folklore reminds me of The Boy Who Cried Wolf; unlike its predecessor, this cautionary tale has a surprising ending with a new lens.

Castillo’s plot is new and refreshing. He gives a makeover to characters that are traditionally evil or good; consequently, teaching the readers that looks can be deceiving. It doesn’t stop there. The story also contains messages of taking responsibility for one’s actions and redemption—that’s where it diverges from Aesop’s wolf-boy.

In addition, the illustrations are distinctive and aesthetics gems—Julia Po doesn’t hold back on her artistic ability. The influence of Van Gogh’s Starry Night is unmistakable. Her color palette is well-balanced and striking. For example, the contrasts between the light sources against the nighttime sky make a glowing effect.

The images keep the reader focused in a particular direction; but, I encourage letting your eyes wander, and you won’t be disappointed. I couldn’t help playing the Hidden Object game on each page; as a hint, I found a “Mona Lisa” witch portrait with an impressionist moon in the background.

Though hard to pick, the poetic writing style is one of my favorite aspects. Castillo uses witty rhymes in his fairy tale. Moreover, his word choices repeatedly hit the mark. As a result, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I noticed no grammar errors; thus, it is exceptionally well-edited.

I'll add to my previous recommendation; this book will please anyone who loves fairy tales with flying broomsticks, weird potions, and a black cat as a sidekick.
