Rita the Remodel Girl: A Summer Project Begins is a children’s picture book written by Kathy Guyitt and illustrated by Stephanie Fliss. In the story, Rita is helping her mother, who is a general contractor, remodel the family space of a home. Rita joins her mother in interviewing the clients and meeting with various team members that will help complete the project, such as a plumber, electrician, and interior designer. While working with her mom, Rita learns about the process for remodeling a home and the different rules general contractors are required to follow.

The message presented in this book is educational and encouraging. Young children will learn how creative remodeling projects can be. Further, the book encourages youngsters to become involved in projects, with the help of their parents, of course. Young readers are sure to learn a lot about remodeling, a process they most likely are not familiar with, through Rita’s story. Reading this book may even encourage future career paths that younger children had never considered.

Moreover, this picture book provides a great combination of engaging visuals and informative narration. The full-page illustrations are vibrant, and the characters depicted are realistic looking and have friendly appearances. The illustrations align with the narrative, depict the most exciting parts of the story, and will help children visualize and understand the different phases of Rita’s project and the different types of workers that are involved. Additionally, the author has included some before and after drafting images of Rita’s project, which add realism to the story.

Rita the Remodel Girl is also well written. The narrative is perfectly edited; I noticed no grammatical errors. Further, the narrative is written with simplistic language that the target audience will be able to digest. Guyitt does a wonderful job of inserting interesting facts about the process for remodeling while keeping the story light and engaging.

Overall, there was nothing to dislike about Rita the Remodel Girl. The message in the book is educational and engaging, the illustrations add value to the story, and the narrative is written at the appropriate level for the target audience. Rita the Remodel Girl easily earns 4 out of 4 stars. This book is best suited for caregivers to read to children ages six to ten. Rita the Remodel Girl will especially appeal to creative boys and girls that are curious about construction projects.

What a cute idea for kids. It’s so good for them to learn about not just the creative side of remodeling but also everything that goes into it and that they’re capable of helping with it. Thanks for the great review

Children have to be taught on how to engage in constructive things and how to help their parents and this is exceptionally a good idea.
