Edward the Egg: Coloring Tales of Adventure by Julia Fagundus is a delightful children’s book about a courageous egg who likes to learn new things. In this book, Edward cooks, fishes, rides a horse, swims, and drives a four-wheeler. He is determined to learn, no matter the danger. Each time he gets cracked, but some kind person helps to tape him back together.

Julia Fagundus created Edward the Egg for her children. I like the entertaining things Edward does to learn something new. His curiosity gets him into trouble, but he also always makes a new friend. I like how each story ends with “Now, off to the next adventure!” At the book’s end are the words “You are chosen, loved and approved.” The reader is encouraged to do a kind deed for someone else and write their own Edward the Egg story.

The illustrations by Madison Mirra were my favorite parts of the book. The drawings of Edward are in black and white, and readers are encouraged to color the pages and draw their own Edward on the blank pages. Children can share their artwork on the RoyalKIND.org website to enter contests and possibly win prizes. The pictures of Edward were fun and lively. He has so much personality in each one.

I disliked that Edward cracked in each chapter and was repaired with tape. Although I realize the “tape” symbolizes helping others and being kind, I can’t get the picture out of my mind of a smashed egg covered in tape. I would like it better if he was saved before he cracked. Another troublesome thing about the stories is Edward is always sneaking into places he shouldn’t be after hours, like the restaurant, the barn, and the swimming pool. It doesn’t set a good example for children and could be dangerous. However, at the beginning of the book, the reader is told to try new things with a trusted adult nearby.

I think most children will love these stories. They have a bit of excitement and danger, but the resolution is always quick with a happy ending. This book’s target audience is children in grades Kindergarten through third. Younger children will love for you to read the stories aloud to them. Each chapter has a complete story and is perfect for bedtime. Kids will enjoy the drawing and coloring pages too.

This book is professionally edited as I detected only two punctuation errors. It has no profanity or slang. I enjoyed it, and I think your kids will too. I felt I couldn’t give this book a perfect score because of my dislikes mentioned above. However, I think it is a good teaching tool about helping others and being brave enough to try new things. I am awarding Edward the Egg: Coloring Tales of Adventure by Julia Fagundus 3 out of 4 stars.
