Will’s Adventure to the Candy Mountain, by Dr. Gerry Haller, is a children’s book about Will having an adventure in a kind of sweet dreamland. His grandmother tells him a story about how if you are an obedient child, you can go to The Candy Mountain. She herself went as a kid. One night, Will wakes up and realizes he is on his way to this promised land. He even makes a friend there: Quinn. Both boys will explore The Candy Mountain and try to get as many candies as possible. What will they find there? Will they be able to return on time or will they miss their train back home?
What I like about this book is that it presents a short story, but with a good rhythm. The book is also illustrated, and the pictures fit the story perfectly. The illustrations were made by YM Cho. The story is very simple, yet it presents a list of adventures, places, and candies that the two boys explore. The only condition they have is to return to the train on time. While exploring this place, they become friends and bond through helping each other. This is a good lesson for kids.
What I dislike about the book is the format. I opened this book on several devices, yet it was a bit heavy for them, and sometimes it was hard to read because my devices were slow. However, this might be subjective, and some other devices might support it better. The general quality of the book was great. This might work only as advice for some devices that run slow.
The book was well-edited. I could not find any mistakes or errors, and the format from the text and pictures was perfectly done. It can be suited both for religious and non-religious readers. It does not contain any profanity or sexual content, so it can be good for any age. However, I think since it is a children’s book, it would be better for kids from 8 to 12, mostly because it has some long and complex sentences for younger readers.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I think the story is sweet, short, and approachable for kids, and also because the book looks professionally made. It can be very useful for teachers, both for native and non-native speakers. As a teacher, I think this might be a useful device to help new learners to understand the language while giving them something fun to read. Also, families might do this at home. I would recommend this book for young readers by themselves, but also for teachers and parents.
