[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Gularian Islands" by Tracey C Ayres.] [rwc=id353127-125]3 out of 4 stars.[/rwc]Gularian Islands, by Tracey C Ayres, is centered around a young teen, named Ben, who involuntarily goes on a heart-pounding adventure when his plane is forced to land on a deserted island.

As Ben travels back home to Australia, a problem with the engine forces the plane to land on a deserted island. Ben and his 3 friends, along with the other passengers on the plane, have no choice but to scavenge through the rest of their belongings to survive long enough for help to arrive. It’s not long before weird situations and strange things start popping up. As Ben explores the island with his friend Gary, they discover a cave where time stops still. Inside the cave, they find out that they are not alone on the island. Gradually, Ben befriends the other inhabitants of the cave, a dragon named Silver and her 3 children. He finds out that Silver has been forced into hiding since an evil dragon called the Black Knight has captured her husband. The Black Knight will stop at nothing to achieve his malicious plan, to take over the world by bringing destruction to anything that comes in his way. Desperate to find a way to stop the Black Knight, Ben tries to use his newly found special powers to outsmart him. However, a few close encounters with the Black Knight has Ben doubting if they will ever leave the Gularian Islands.

From the first sentence, I was easily drawn into the story as the author brought life to the settings and characters with her detailed descriptions and interesting dialogue. As soon as Ben step foot on the island, it felt like I was there beside him. I was instantly immersed in a world where giant insects roam the land while even bigger beings roam the sky. The story read like an adventure where there were many twists and turns in the plot, some with which I never some coming. There was also an air of mystery as Ben tries to figure out why he has special powers and how the dragons came to be.

What I like the most about the book was the exciting plotline with some mystery weaved in. However, there were also a few minor things that I did not like about the book. The story mainly revolves around Ben and his journey to defeat the Black Knight and get off of the island. His character shows growth throughout the book as he becomes more aware of his powers. However, the secondary characters, like Ben’s friend Gary, were depicted as flat and static characters. None of the other characters showed any growth in the story. This observation is just a minor complaint and didn’t affect my rating of the book.

Furthermore, I also came across a couple of typos. Throughout the book, if a word had the letter “l” in it twice, the second letter “l” would be missing. This mistake would often mess with the flow of the story because I had to stop and reread the sentence. There were also spacing issues between some of the paragraphs where there should not be a line break. Besides those errors, I found the book to be an enjoyable read.

Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Ben’s adventures in the Gularian Islands. There were a couple of typos so I could not give this book 4 stars, even though it was a captivating read. I recommend this book to tween readers who enjoy fantasy books filled with adventure and mystery. ****** Gularian Islands View: on Bookshelves | on Amazon
