While Martha undoubtedly would have been going through a lot in her all-white school, I can imagine that it was probably more emotionally traumatizing for her to be rejected by your own people for joining a white school; they must have seen her as a sellout of some sort. Either way, this sounds like an entertaining book as well as a useful tool in the discussion of race and race relations for kids.
